VILLAGE HAIR PRESENTS
BELOVED COMMUNITY:
A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION ABOUT
THE VILLAGE AT ITHACA

When June Jordan wrote, “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” this is what she meant. This photography exhibition documents the joy, power, and leadership of the young leaders who are shaping a world where all children are safe, seen, and free—not someday, but right now.

VILLAGE HAIR opens monthly on first Fridays from 5 to 8pm for Ithaca Gallery Night, hosted by Village at Ithaca volunteers.

CURL POWER

VILLAGE HAIR is home to Brown Babes Braiding, a teaching salon facilitated by The Village at Ithaca, where young braiders and barbers can earn hours toward their Natural Hair Care Licenses with mentors who center their natural hair textures and preferred cultural and protective hairstyles.

COMBING THROUGH HISTORY

Our first exhibition at 502 West State Street, the All Voices Group Show ‘VILLAGE HAIR’ explored the ways our hair braids together the strands of identity, pride, and power.

Because protective hairstyles and upkeep demand time and resources, our access and choices are tangled up with factors like race, gender, social class, and economic power.

Hairstyles originated by marginalized communities have long been targeted for discrimination at work and school, then appropriated as a fashion statement.

The CROWN Act prohibits race-based hair discrimination in New York and 26 other states, while the other 23 states still tacitly enforce Eurocentric beauty standards.

BE THE VILLAGE

The Village at Ithaca embraces young people with solutions, empowerment, and opportunities for positive development.
